In the noon of June 22, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) shot down an armed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which was heading towards Hama airbase, west of the governorate’s city center.

Syrian journalist Abdul Ghani Jaroukh released several photos of the downed UAV, which was armed with ten small-diameter munitions filled with high-explosives.

The UAV’s design appears to be identical to the ones usually used by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the former branch of al-Qaeda in Syria. The terrorist group began using this type of DIY armed UAVs in early 2018.

Hama airbase is one of three key air fields in central Syria. The airbase is hosing several squadrons of the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF). Some Russian units are also deployed there.

In the last two months, HTS and its Turkish-backed allies intensified their drones and rockets attacks on Hama airbase. However, they failed to cause any serious damage.
