During a series of search operations in the recently liberated areas in the governorates of Daraa, Homs and Damascus, the Syria Arab Army (SAA) uncovered loads of weapons, some of which had been made in the U.S.

A Syrian officer who oversaw the operations told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) on January 27 that the cooperation of the locals allowed the army to uncover many weapons caches, which were carefully hidden.
The seized weapons included:
- Seven Bulgarian and Soviet-made Konkurs anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and a launcher;
- Four Bulgarian and Soviet-made Fagot ATGMs;
- Six US-made TOW ATGMs;
- A Yugoslav-made M79 Osa anti-tank weapon along with several rounds;
- An SPG-9 73mm recoilless gun with several rounds;
- Two Grad 122mm rockets;
- Several Russian-made MRO-A and RPO-A thermobaric rocket launchers;
- Several US-made M72 LAW anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades;
- Several Russian-made RPG-22 and RPG-18 anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades;
- Loads of ammunition and many machine guns of different calibers.
Most of these weapons were supplied by the U.S. and its allies to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) under a “train and equip” program which had been authorized by former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2014. The program was halted by President Donald Trump in 2017. However, most of the weapons found its way to the black market or even to the hands of terrorist groups.
