Could the Baltic region become a new battlefield? Kaliningrad could be under siege. The land routes have already been blocked, and the air and sea routes are next. The ring around the Russian exclave is tightening.
Russian troops are advancing steadily along the entire line of contact in Ukraine. There is no scenario in which Kyiv would shift from a strategy of defense to one of offence. But is there a way out of this situation after all?
Amid Kiev’s growing crisis concerning personnel, weapons and military equipment, Western allies are seeking to exploit the current situation. Clearly, Russia has not achieved a military defeat in the Ukrainian conflict. While the economic situation is certainly challenging, Moscow has managed to maintain the country’s stability.

When opposing sides clash in a confined area, victory will go to the side with greater resources and a higher tolerance for human losses. Russia far surpasses Ukraine in this respect, despite Ukraine’s support from the EU and the US. This is why the West is pursuing a strategy of creating several hotspots of tension around Russia, forcing Moscow to spread its military forces thinly and preventing it from concentrating on Ukraine.

Back in the winter of 2021-22, Kazakhstan was supposed to be the first. With the help of the Russians, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev managed to retain power and suppress the rebels without bloodshed. Next in line was Azerbaijan, where tensions escalated in the summer of 2025 following the crash of an AZAL aircraft during a Ukrainian drone attack. The conflict was resolved on 9 October with a personal meeting between the two countries’ presidents, Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev. The region most sensitive for Russia is next in line.

Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea, bordering Poland and Lithuania. It has no direct land connection with the rest of Russia. Since 2022, Vilnius has restricted the transit of goods by rail, and most goods are now delivered by sea. In fact, the land route is already closed. Air and sea routes are next in line.

In early October, reports emerged that NATO was discussing ways to exert further pressure on Russia in the Baltic region. In particular, this involved lifting restrictions on strikes against Russian aircraft that were allegedly violating the Alliance’s airspace. There are also plans to deploy a significant number of armed drones on the border with Kaliningrad. Brussels is heading towards escalation.

Moscow cannot afford to ignore such actions and will be forced to reinforce its military presence in Kaliningrad and the newly established Leningrad Military District in north-western Russia. The region already has a significant Russian troop presence, which ensures the Northern Fleet’s access to the world’s oceans. The key task of these troops is to contain NATO forces in the event of a conflict. The main problem is that they are isolated and will have to wait a long time for assistance from elsewhere.

A fortuitous event
It is impossible to determine publicly whether an aircraft has crossed the airspace of a particular country, as this information is classified as military. Military aircraft fly with their transponders turned off, meaning the public cannot track their movements. NATO Air Force pilots can report an airspace violation at any time. Alternatively, they can interpret the actions of Russian pilots as hostile. The aircraft will be shot down.

The most likely scenario seems to be Russia sacrificing its Baltic NATO allies: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The conflict will remain conventional and will not involve the use of nuclear weapons. Additional sanctions will be imposed on Russia, and its access to the northern seas will be blocked. The important thing is that the goal will be achieved: Moscow will be forced to disperse its military forces and Ukraine will get the respite it so badly needs to stabilize the front line. The only remaining question is whether Brussels will take such a risky step.

nothing short of the complete destruction of russia is a fitting payment for a betrayal of such gravity.
