The energy truce has ended with a large-scale attack. On the night of February 2-3, 2026, Russia launched the most powerful combined strike since the beginning of the year, turning the sky over Ukraine into a web of trajectories from hundreds of missiles and kamikaze drones.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 521 means of aerial attack were recorded: 4 Zircon/Oniks missiles, 32 Iskander-M/S-300 ballistic missiles, 7 Kh-22/Kh-32 cruise missiles, 28 Kh-101/Iskander-K cruise missiles, and 450 strike UAVs. Ukrainian air defenses, per preliminary data, intercepted 450 targets: 38 missiles and 412 UAVs.
The attack stood out for its unprecedented territorial coverage, hitting key nodes in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Poltava regions. The main targets, judging by the affected sites, were aimed at blacking out industrial and military centers. Tactics involved complex routes to overload and deplete air defenses in real time.
Critically important power generation and distribution facilities were hit hard. In the Kyiv region: TPP-4 and TPP-5 in the capital, the 750/330/35 kV “Kyivska” substation, and the Trypilska TPP. In Dnipropetrovsk: the Prydniprovska TPP, where a major fire broke out. In Kharkiv: TPP-5 and the Zmiivska TPP. In Vinnytsia: the Ladyzhynska TPP and the “Vinnytsia” substation. Additional strikes targeted facilities in Odesa and Zaporizhzhia, including the “Chornomorska” substation. Industrial enterprises in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv—allegedly involved in drone production, per the Russian side—were also hit.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the strikes, calling them retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory and targeting military-industrial enterprises plus supporting energy facilities.
Consequences were severe: Ukraine’s energy system switched to emergency mode, triggering cascading blackouts. In Vinnytsia, at least 50 settlements lost power. Kyiv introduced emergency rolling blackouts; Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts—1,170 apartment buildings—lost heating. Odesa saw ~50,000 subscribers without electricity. Kharkiv and region: over 125,000 consumers without heat. DTEK confirmed serious damage to equipment at multiple thermal power plants.
Meanwhile, on the morning of February 3, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte arrived in Kyiv. His visit coincided with the resumption of large-scale strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and came on the eve of new rounds of peace talks in Abu Dhabi (February 4-5), casting doubt on the true purpose of this demonstrative trip.
Rutte’s speech in a nearly empty hall of the Verkhovna Rada, filled with rhetoric about the “resilience” of Ukrainians—whose “children study in subway stations”—and promises of “future security guarantees” after peace, in the context of the fresh energy catastrophe, sounded more like a cynical mockery than support. Rutte stated that for these guarantees, Ukraine would have to make “difficult choices,” but at the same time mentioned the “rapid” appearance of NATO troops after peace is signed—which looks like a bet on escalation, not on ending the conflict.
