Russian troops have begun to use a new, simple technique to take down multirotor drones used by Kiev forces with zero cost.
The technique requires a multirotor interceptor drone equipped with just a piece of cord with washers or similar small metal objects. The interceptor flies over the target drone. Naturally, the cord jams the propellers of the drone upon approach, sending it plunging to the ground.
Videos showing several Ukrainian drones being successfully intercepted using this technique surfaced online on May 17 and prior days.
While this technique appears to be effective against reconnaissance and attack multirotor drones, it will not likely work with much faster FPV suicide multirotor drones.
For the Russian military, electronic warfare remains the first line of defense against multirotor drones in general. Still, the military began to experiment with new methods to deal with such drones over the past year.
Russian troops were seen using FPV interceptor drones, attack drones, and even sniper rifles to take down Ukrainian multirotor drones in recent months. In addition, the country showcased recently a man-portable laser gun capable of downing this type of drones.
