The Unknown War is an American 20-part series that documents the World War II conflict between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

Today, SouthFront shares the 12th part of the series titled “The Battle of Caucasus”. During the Second World War, the Nazis repeatedly planned to seize the Caucasus.

“My main thought is to occupy the area of the Caucasus, defeating the Russian forces as thoroughly as possible… If I do not get the oil of Maikop and Grozny, I must liquidate the war…” Hitler told his officers in 1942.

Already in 1941 the Nazis took concrete steps for this purpose. However, the real Battle of the Caucasus in July of 1942. The battle went through two phases: the German offensive between July 25 and December 31 of 1942 and the Soviet counteroffensive from January 1 to October 9 of 1943.

The Soviet Army managed to win at several key points in the battle. The Nazis had withdrawn to the Kuban bridgehead by May of 1943. The next year, they were completely expelled from the Caucasus after suffering more than 280,000 casualties. The battle became one of the turning points in the entire Great Patriotic War.

oil , war and bankers . 70 years natural gas was mostly a waste product from oil extraction . not anymore .
