Trump Threatens Hezbollah With Syria Again And Sharaa Rejects

United States President Donald Trump has once again threatened Hezbollah with military intervention by Syria, whose president has repeatedly rejected the idea.

In an interview with Fox News aired on June 21, Trump stated that Israel has been unable to “put Hezbollah away” in Lebanon.

“I am disappointed Israel cannot put Hezbollah away,” he added.

Trump also criticized Israel’s military approach in Lebanon, saying that “they can’t do anything without knocking buildings down.”

The U.S. president suggested, yet again, that Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa could be more effective in dealing with the group.

“I am close to giving this to Syria,” Trump said in terms of dealing with Hezbollah.

Trump made similar threats on several occasions in recent weeks, with Sharaa denying that Syria could intervene in Lebanon each time.

The latest remarks were also met by rejection from Sharaa, who stressed in an interview aired later on June 21 on Al Mashhad TV that Syria has no plans to take military action against Hezbollah despite past grievances over the group’s intervention in the country.

Sharaa stated that a “deep Syrian wound” remains over Hezbollah’s past support for former Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.

“There is a major Syrian wound that is still alive to this day, and Hezbollah is part of it,” Sharaa said.

Despite those grievances, Sharaa said that Syria would be prepared to engage with the group “if doing so benefited both nations.”

“We will sit at the same table with Hezbollah if it serves the interests of Syria and Lebanon,” he added.

He also argued that the solution in Lebanon cannot come through war or bombardment, warning that renewed conflict there “would have significant consequences for Syria.”

“The situation in Lebanon cannot withstand further polarization,” he said, adding that there remains a major opportunity to halt the war and reach a political consensus to overcome the crisis.

In addition, the Syrian president said he had presented “a different approach” to French President Emmanuel Macron for ending the war in Lebanon, noting that Trump had expressed discomfort with the current situation in Lebanon, although his remarks had been “misunderstood.”

Despite Sharaa’s repeated objection to any military intervention against Hezbollah, recent reports indicate a Syrian military buildup along the border with Lebanon. Ultimately, under pressure from the U.S., the Syrian president could find himself forced to take such action.

Iran, the main backer of Hezbollah, has so far remained silent over the issue, but it is guaranteed that the Islamic Republic will not tolerate any such move by Syria.

Any Syrian military intervention against Hezbollah will likely spark a sectarian-charged regional war, possibly with Iranian strikes on Damascus, and a counteroffensive from Iraq by the Islamic Republic’s allies there. The U.S. and even Israel may be looking for such a scenario to make up for their recent military failure against Tehran.
