Turkey is boosting military drills on the border with the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, the Turkish media reported citing the Turkish General Staff.
According to the report, Ankara deployed addional forces to the ongoing drills that started on September 18 ahead of an indepdence referendum planned by the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Turkey, Iran, the Iraqi Federal Government as well as many other countries oppose to the planned referendum. The only state that officially supports a possible independence of the Kurdistan Region is Israel.
Turkey, Iran and Iraq are actively holding talks on the issue and, according to some indications, evaluating a possible military action in case if the KRG is going to make attempt to turn the region into an independent state.
