The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) announced on February 16 that it had destroyed another air defense system of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the west of the country.
The armed forces, which are allied to Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey, have been engaged in a power struggle with the paramilitary group, backed by the UAE, for close to three years now.
In a statement, the SAF said that the air defense system was hit near the town of Abu Zabad in the state of Western Kordofan. While the armed forces didn’t provide any additional details, Arab media reports identified the targeted system as a Chinese-made FB-10A and said that it was targeted by a Turkish-made Bayraktar Akıncı combat drone.
Footage of the strike shows the same markers typically seen in the optical targeting systems installed in the Akıncı or the smaller Bayraktar TB2 combat drone. Both made by Turkish drone giant Baykar, which reportedly supplied them to the SAF.
The FB-10A is a mobile short-range air defense missile system developed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, more known by its acronym CASC.
The system, which is based on the Dongfeng Mengshi 6×6 chassis, is equipped with a phased array radar, optical sensor, and eight missile launch tubes.
The missile has a range of 18 kilometers, an engagement altitude of 7,500 meters, and a dual-mode guidance system that consists of radio command and imaging infrared homing. The combined guidance allows the missile to be more resistant against countermeasures.
An unknown number of FB-10A systems was reportedly supplied to the RSF by the UAE last year. The systems were transferred via Chad.
Over the past year, the RSF shot down multiple SAF drones, including at least seven Akıncıs. Most of these aerial kills were, however, attributed to another Chinese-made air defense system supplied by the UAE via Chad, the FK-2000 which has a range of 25 kilometers.
Last week, the SAF managed to destroy an FK-2000 system of the RSF for the first time. The system was hit in South Kordofan, also by an Akıncı.
Recent drone strikes may have degraded the air defenses of the RSF in a significant manner. The number of FB-10A and FK-2000 systems in service with the group is believed to be very limited. With no new fresh supplies, the group could soon face the full wrath of SAF drones.
