The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged on May 4 that two soldiers were killed and two were wounded in an explosion in a booby-trapped tunnel shaft in the area of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip a day earlier.
The slain soldiers were both serving in the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit, the military said. According to an initial probe, the Yahalom troops , operating under the Golani Brigade, were scanning the entrance to a tunnel inside a building when they were suddenly hit by an explosion. One of the wounded soldiers was listed in serious condition, while the other was moderately hurt.
On the same day, several other soldiers were wounded in two separate incidents in northern Gaza. A reservist with the Jerusalem Brigade’s 7007th Battalion was seriously wounded in an unspecified part of the region. In addition, two soldiers of the 401st Armored Brigade’s 46th Battalion were wounded, one moderately and one lightly, in a blast in an military encampment in the of Gaza City’s eastern Daraj and Tuffah neighborhoods.
The latest deaths brought the number of Israeli soldiers killed since the IDF renewed its offensive in Gaza on March 18 to three. An Israeli police officer was also killed in the Strip.
The losses came as the IDF was sending out tens of thousands of call-up orders to reservists in preparations to significantly expand its offensive against the Hamas Movement in Gaza.
On May 4, the IDF said that it struck over 100 targets in Gaza over the weekend, including cells of fighters, tunnel infrastructure, and buildings used by “terror groups.”
The strikes come as ground troops continue to operate across the Strip. In northern Gaza, the IDF said that the 252nd Division located a cache of weapons and killed several fighters; in the so-called Morag Corridor in the south of the Strip, the 36th Division located additional weapons and killed fighters by directing strikes; and in Rafah, the Gaza Division destroyed dozens of “terror infrastructures” and killed several operatives.
The IDF has occupied more than 30% of Gaza’s territory since renewing its offensive, shattering a ceasefire and hostage agreement that was brokered by the United States, Egypt and Qatar. The offensive has so far claimed the lives of more than 2,300 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
Israel says that the current offensive in Gaza is only meant to pressure Hamas into releasing the remaining 59 hostages in Gaza as a part of a new ceasefire agreement, but the upcoming expanded offensive will be aimed at completely defeating the group.
