U.S. Lost Several Aircraft In Operation To Rescue Second Crew Member Of F-15 Downed In Iran (Video, Photos)

United States President Donald Trump announced on April 5 that the second crew member of the F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet shot down two days earlier over Iran had been rescued, calling the mission to get back the weapons system officer “one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History.”

Trump said in a post to Truth Social that the unnamed crew member, a colonel, was injured but “will be just fine,” describing him as “SAFE and SOUND!”

The officer was stuck in “the treacherous mountains of Iran” and was rescued as “enemy forces” closed in on him, he wrote.

“At my direction, the U.S. Military sent dozens of aircraft, armed with the most lethal weapons in the World, to retrieve him,” Trump added, also confirming the rescue of the pilot of the F-15E a two earlier.

“This is the first time in military memory that two U.S. Pilots have been rescued, separately, deep in Enemy Territory,” he wrote. “The fact that we were able to pull off both of these operations, without a SINGLE American killed, or even wounded, just proves once again, that we have achieved overwhelming Air Dominance and Superiority over the Iranian skies.”

The F-15E — from the U.S. Air Force’s 48th Fighter Wing based at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom — was shot down in the province of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad in the southwest of the Islamic Republic on April 3.

An A-10 Thunderbolt II attack jet was shot down while taking part in the operation to rescue the F-15E’s pilot. It crashed in Kuwait with its pilot ejecting safely. There were also reports that an UH-60 Black Hawk and two HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopters were damaged in the same mission.

The second operation to rescue the weapons system officer was conducted by a specialized commando unit with a high volume of air cover, and the U.S. forces unleashed a hail of heavy fire, an American official told Axios.

Another report by The Wall Street Journal revealed that the officer, who was injured when the F-15E was hit, had to perform a “daring move to meet his rescue team.”

American MQ-9 Reaper combat drones shot at Iranians attempting to capture the downed officer during his approximately 36 hours in a mountainous region before his rescue, the newspaper says, citing officials and people familiar with the operation.

Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that two transport aircraft spiriting taking part in the operation n got stuck on the ground and had to be blown up, with three new planes sent into Iran to take the officer and rescue team out.

The military then blew up the transport planes so they would not fall into Iran’s hands, the newspaper reported, noting that hundreds of special operations soldiers took part in the mission.

Iranian media reported that five people were killed in strikes during the American operation to rescue the weapons system officer.

At the same time, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said that several U.S. aircraft were destroyed during the mission, according to Tasnim news agency.

“During a joint operation (Aerospace, Ground Force, Popular Units, Basij and Police command), enemy aircraft were destroyed,” the force said after Iran’s police command claimed an American C-130 plane had been downed in the south of Isfahan.

The spokesperson of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, the unified command of the Iranian armed forces, said the downed aircraft included a C-130 military transport plane as well as two Black Hawk helicopters.

Initial analysis of footage from the scene indicates that the aircraft destroyed during the American mission included at least one MH-6 Little Bird.

While the rescue operation was without a doubt successful, it was clearly very costly for the U.S. military, with reports suggesting that, in total, as many as six aircraft may have been lost, including the downed F-15e.

With diplomatic efforts showing very little progress in recent days, the success of the operation could encourage Trump to escalate further by Iran. He has already renewed threats to hit Iranian energy facilities, and could then order ground operations.

the new york time story dont add up, the aircraft wouldn’t land behind enemy line and the blackhawks would just drop the special forces and goes back up in the air . even if they did stay grounded they would be able to take off quick. the transport aircraf got stuck on the ground,i guess the there was a runway in the mountains .
