A civilian contractor working with the United Arab Emirates armed forces was killed and five Emirati military personnel were wounded in an Iranian missile attack in Bahrain, the UAE Defense Ministry said on March 24.
The ministry noted in a statement that the contractor was a Moroccan national, without providing more details on the incident.
Bahrain confirmed the missile attack, with its defense force acknowledging that Bahrain military personnel were also wounded.
Over a dozen were wounded, including four in critical condition, according to the BBC, which revealed that the attack targeted Hamala base in the western part of Bahrain. The fairly large base includes training grounds, and reportedly hosts special forces.
Bahrain is home to the United States Navy’s 5th Fleet. The Gulf country has taken the brunt of Iranian retaliatory strikes since the start of the American-Israel war on the Islamic Republic more than three weeks ago.
Recent reports even revealed that Shaikh Isa Air Base — which at times served as a logistics hub for the U.S. Central Command — was hit more than once in recent days, and an American-made MIM-104 Patriot long-range air defense system deployed at a small site nearby was also destroyed.
Bahrain’s defense force said earlier on March 24 that its air defenses have intercepted 153 missiles and 301 drones since the start of the war on Iran.
The deadly missile attack on Bahrain came as The Wall Street Journal reported that Saudi Arabia and the UAE are moving closer toward actively joining the war on Iran. According to the report, the Gulf countries are “inching toward” a more active role, after Saudi Arabia allowed U.S. forces to use an air base within its borders.
A source familiar with the decision cited by the news outlet said that it is “only a matter of time” before Saudi Arabia enters the war, after its foreign minister said last week that its patience for Iranian attacks “is not unlimited.”
