Russia used an enhanced ballistic missile against Kyiv for the first time during one of its combined strikes on the Ukrainian capital this summer, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence agency (HUR) said on August 27.
In a statement posted to Telegram, the intelligence service said that the missile, designated the 9M723-2 and known informally as the Iskander-1000, is part of a system called Bora-M.
“Thanks to an enlarged engine and correspondingly larger launcher, the upgraded missile can strike targets at a distance of up to 550 kilometers, compared to 390 kilometers for the 9M723-1 [Iskander-M]. The rest of the missile’s components remain identical to the 9M723-1,” HUR said.
Ukrainian intelligence officials said Russian forces have increasingly relied on ballistic missiles as their primary means of aerial attack in recent months.
The highly-maneuverable Iskander-M can be armed with different conventional warheads weighing 710-800 kg, including a cluster munitions warhead, a fuel-air explosive enhanced-blast warhead, a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, an earth penetrator for bunker busting and an electromagnetic pulse device for anti-radar missions.
The missile is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. It can be also equipped with an optical seeker with a digitized scene-mapping area correlator system for terminal guidance.
Aside from the claims made by the HUR, there is no evidence supporting the existence of an enhanced Iskander-M version. In fact, the same missile has long been rumored to have a range of around 500 kilometers.
Recent weeks saw a series of reports by Ukrainian intelligence services all claiming that Russia is bolstering its arsenal of ballistic missiles, acquiring some from North Korea, and producing new ones based on the anti-aircraft missiles of the S-400 air defense system. There is still no physical evidence of any of these claims.
Ukraine may be spreading these claims to solicit more support from its Western backers, in particular, expensive and scarce interceptors for American-made Patriot air defense systems. Kyiv’s air defenses have been facing a serious shortage of such missiles.
