On December 2, the Russian military captured more settlements close to Huliaipole in Zaporozhye, mounting more pressure on remaining Ukrainian defenses around the key city.
The capture of Zelyony Gai, located to the east of Huliaipole, and Dobropillya, located along the Haichur River to the north of the city, by the Vostok [East] Group of Forces was announced by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
In two separate statements, the ministry said that the first settlement was captured by the 38th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 35th Combined Arms Army, and the second by the the 37th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 36th Combined Arms Army.
Kiev forces lost 15 pieces of military equipment during the battle in Zelyony Gai, according to the ministry, which said that a total of eight square kilometers, including the settlement and its outskirts, were captured.
“The liberation of Zelyony Gai created a critical situation for the enemy, as his defences lost integrity and were reduced to isolated firing points. The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine didn’t have time to withdraw its units from their positions,” it added.
Meanwhile in Dobropillya, Russian troops overran “a large defensive outpost of more than 18 square kilometers, equipped with anti-tank moats, dragon’s teeth, and explosive and non-explosive barriers,” the ministry said.
“By advancing from two directions, the Vostok Group of Forces deprived the enemy of manoeuvring and forced him to abandon part of the fortifications without attempting to organize the defense,” it added.
During the battle in the large settlement, Ukraine lost a large number of troops in addition to 15 pieces of military equipment.
The Vostok Group of Forces has already taken over much of the eastern outskirts of Huliaipole, and after capturing Dobropillya, Russian troops are already advancing in Varvarivka, the last settlement along the Haichur before the northern outskirts of the city.
Just a day earlier, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov announced that President Vladimir Putin was informed during a visit to a frontline command center on November 30 that the operation to “liberate” Huliaipole had begun, with street fighting already underway inside the city.
The president “gave new directives to provide the troops with everything necessary for combat operations during the coming winter,” Peskov noted.
It’s worth noting that during the same meeting Putin was informed that the cities of Pokrovsk in Donetsk and Vovchansk had been captured by the Russian military.
The fate of Huliaipole will not likely be very different. The Vostok Group of Forces has already begun dropping leaflets over the city calling on Ukrainian troops there to surrender, according to footage shared by the Russian MoD.
Ukrainian defenses to the north and east of Huliaipole were very well-built. Their collapse within a few weeks indicate that Kiev forces are suffering from serious problems related to resources, logistics and even command, on both lower and higher levels. The chances of Ukraine rappelling the Russian attack on the city, or even prolonging the battle there for months are extremely low.
