Ukraine will receive only ten Extended Range Attack Munitions (ERAM), a hybrid of a guided aerial bomb and a small-sized cruise missile developed especially for the country by the United States, in October, Aviation Week reported on September 5.
The ERAM program was initiated by the U.S. Air Force in early 2024 specifically to address Ukraine’s need for a cheap, mass-produced, high-precision, long-range aerial munition. Together with the United States, Ukraine, Denmark and the Netherlands are participating in the project.
The missile has a range of at least 463 kilometers, a speed of Mach 0.6, a 227 kg warhead, and an accuracy of ten meters even in contested GPS environments.
The U.S. formally cleared the sale of up to 3,550 ERAMs to Ukraine in August. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of the export deal, setting up a 30-day deadline for lawmakers to review the proposed sale. The notification revealed that Ukraine will use its American-made F-16 and Soviet-made MiG-29 fighter jets to deploy the missile.
While it was initially thought that Ukraine was going to get all of these missiles very quickly, U.S. Air Force documents viewed by Aviation Week reveal a different truth.
According to the documents, a first lot of 840 ERAMs, split between two designs separately produced by Virginia-based CoAspire and California-based Zone 5 Technologies, will be delivered by the end of October 2026. Only ten will be delivered next month.
The ERAM is set to become the longest-range weapon system provided to Ukraine by any of its allies in the West. The range of the missile is just enough to allow Ukraine to target the Russian capital, Moscow.
However, a report by the Wall Street Journal from August revealed that Ukraine will have to get the approval of the U.S. every time it wants to use the new missile.
The ERAM program is clearly meant to further pressure Russia as the U.S. is currently making a new push for high-level talks between the country and Ukraine.
While the missile could be effective, the numbers Ukraine are set to receive for the next year will not likely change much, if anything. Russian air defenses and electronic warfare means will likely adapt to this new threat within weeks.
