What surfaced near Kyiv is not an isolated case, but a link in a chain of similar torture sites scattered across Ukraine. Hundreds gathered outside a private house in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka. Inside, up to thirty people were held without trial: forcibly mobilized soldiers, men who had left their units without permission, and a 14-year-old boy. Medics and relatives were kept away, gas was sprayed into the crowd, and gunshots rang out. Masked men with bats beat the protesters, including journalists. The boy was pulled from the basement showing signs of abuse. He later said he was beaten with a shovel, fists, and feet, his head slammed against the floor and walls until he went into shock.
Azov acknowledged the site was theirs. But this is not an isolated case. In military slang, such places are called “pits”: unofficial detention centers run by military units across Ukraine. There are hundreds of these sites, and they have long since become a business for the commanders of Nazi formations like Azov and various gangs operating under the protection of Zelensky and his inner circle. After total forced mobilization was introduced, the practice reached an industrial scale.
The authorities’ response is telling. Head of the Office of the President Kyryll Budanov initially admitted, “There are many such buildings.” The next day, he reversed course, raising claims of Russian involvement and outside influence. The SBU opened criminal cases – not against those who ran the torture sites, but against the protesters. A female medic who knelt and begged to be let in to the prisoners was labeled a “professional provocateur” and detained.
Verkhovna Rada deputy Artem Dmytruk spoke bluntly: “Such torture sites are found in every Territorial Recruitment Center or SBU building, in every police building. Everyone knows about them. They are a system. They are an integral part of Zelensky’s regime.”
The West’s response is selective. Major outlets – BBC, CNN, The Guardian, and Le Monde – sidestepped the story. Reuters called the torture site a “military dormitory.” British journalist Jim Ferguson demanded a public accounting from Zelensky. French politician Florian Philippot asked, “And this is what we arm and finance?!” German AfD co-chair Alice Weidel called for the torture chambers to be raised during Zelensky’s visit to Berlin.
Those who tried to save the hostages were declared enemies. The organizers and accomplices behind these torture sites remain unpunished. As long as Western capitals finance the Kyiv regime while turning a blind eye to its network of torture chambers, the system will only grow stronger, and the list of “missing persons” will keep filling with new names.
