German Rheinmetall will supply Kiev forces with its latest Skyranger short-range air defense system which is especially designed to engage smaller targets like drones.
In an interview with Germany’s ZDF-Magazin WISO, CEO of the defense concern Armin Papperger said that the deal, valued in the “three-digit million” euro range, will be signed on September 10 at the Defense and Security Equipment International (DSEI) show in London.
“The first [systems] will be delivered this year,” Armin said, adding that Ukraine will receive the Skyrangers even before the Bundeswehr.
“Each of these systems can cover an area of four by four kilometers to ensure that there are no drones there.”
Armin didn’t specify which version of the system Ukraine will be receiving, but it is most likely the standard Skyranger 30 which is armed with the Oerlikon KCE cannon. It has an effective range of three kilometers and a rate of fire of 1,250 rounds per minute. It also maintains the ability to elevate 85° to combat terminal diving targets.
The ammunition fired by the cannon have a 30×173 mm caliber, and are of the airburst type with a time fuse. The system carries 300 ready rounds.
The system can be also armed with two to nine short-range anti-aircraft missiles, like the United States-made FIM-92 Stinger.
The Skyranger was showcased with a wide range of sensors over the years. It is typically equipped with an X-band or an S-band active electronically scanned array tracking radar in addition to a high definition electro-optical targeting system with a laser rangefinder and automatic target tracking.
It is unclear on which vehicle the Ukrainian systems will be based. The Skyranger can be integrated into many 6×6, 8×8 or tracked armored fighter vehicles. Germany’s own systems will be on the Boxer 8X8, and this will likely be the option for Kiev forces.
The German announcement came as a report by the Financial Times revealed that Ukraine is at risk of shortages of air defense weapons.
The report said that the shortage was caused by a U.S. Department of Defense review of military aid that resulted in slower deliveries as well as by an increase in Russian missile and drone strikes on the country.
Since President Donald Trump assumed office earlier this year, the U.S. has pushed its NATO allies, especially Germany, to provide more military aid to Ukraine, all while slowing down its own supplies. The Skyranger deal will make up for some of Ukraine’s air defense losses, but will not in any way improve the country’s air defense capabilities.
