An Azerbaijani Soviet-made MiG-29 multirole fighter jet has been spotted in active service with the Ukrainian Air Force (UAF).
A photo showing the fighter jet in question appeared online on September 3. It was recognized via its dark-blue and grey four-tone camouflage scheme, which is unique to the Azerbaijani Air Force (AAF). While the fighter jet kept its original camouflage, it got the roundel of the UAF painted on its wings.
The AAF operates 11 MiG-29A 9.13s and three dual-seat MiG-29UBs used for training. Just a few weeks before the start of the Russian special military operation, three of the MiG-29A 9.13s were spotted at the Lviv State Aviation Repair Plant western Ukraine, where they were apparently getting refurbished.

The plant was targeted in the early months of the special military operation, and at the time it was reported that at least some of the AAF fighter jets were destroyed.
The latest photo indicates that at least one of the Azerbaijani MiG-29s survived and was taken over by the UAF. It is unclear, however, if this was done with the approval of Bakau.
Despite having a larger fuel capacity and better electronic-warfare systems than earlier MiG-29 versions, MiG-29A 9.13 is still considered one of the fighter jets’ older models. The one spotted with the UAF appeared to be armed with two R-27-type beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles and four R-73 short-range air-to-air missiles.
It is also very likely that the fighter jet, like the rest of Ukraine’s MiG-29s, was modified to deliver Western-made precision-guided munitions.
Before the start of the Russian special military operation, some 40 MiG-29A, MiG-29S, MiG-29MU1 and MiG-29MU2 were in service with the UAF. A year into the operation, Ukraine received at least 27 MiG-29G and MiG-29AS from Poland and Slovakia.
Wikipedia’s list of aviation shootdowns and accidents during the conflict says that the UAF had lost around 50 MiG-29, including three described as “damaged”. The real losses are likely even higher. Just last month, at least one such fighter jet was shot down.
