A service member of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) was assassinated by unknown militants on the highway between the city of Daraa and the nearby town of Tafas on February 14, according to the Syrian news outlet, Enab Baladi.
Syrian pro-government activists identified the service member as Nazir al-Subh, a Warrant Officer in the Syrian Military Intelligence, who has been serving in the southern governorate for years now.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, sources said that the so-called Popular Resistance in Daraa could be behind the assassination. The group, which emerged last year, says that its operations are a response to the violations of the reconciliation agreement by the Damascus government.
Earlier this month, the Popular Resistance in Daraa was held responsible for an attack on a checkpoint of the SAA in the northern Daraa countryside. Several Syrian soldiers were reportedly injured in the attack.
The Syrian army and intelligence are carrying out security operations in southern Syria on a daily basis in cooperation with the local leaders in the region. These efforts have recently been intensified.
