United States Vice President JD Vance acknowledged on November 4 that the war against Iran was the principal reason Republicans suffered a sweeping defeat in the midterm elections, losing control of both chambers of Congress.
“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance wrote in a post on X, offering an unusually direct assessment of the political consequences of the military campaign.
Vance went further, openly questioning whether the heavy political price paid by Republicans for the war on Iran had been justified.
“If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest,” he added.
The Democratic victories handed the party control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, ending Republican dominance in Washington and dealing a major blow to President Donald Trump’s second-term agenda.
Democrats made substantial gains even in traditionally Republican strongholds, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with the administration, including its decision to wage war against Iran. The economy and rising living costs also featured prominently in voters’ concerns.
The war, launched jointly by the U.S. and Israel on February 28, followed an intensive lobbying campaign by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had long pressed Washington to strike Iran.
A Washington Post investigation reported that Israeli and Saudi efforts helped persuade Trump to authorize the operation, despite U.S. intelligence assessments indicating that the Islamic Republic was unlikely to pose an immediate threat to the American mainland within the next decade.
The circumstances surrounding the decision have fueled criticism that the administration prioritized Israel’s regional objectives over the interests of the U.S., committing American military power and resources to a confrontation that carried substantial economic and security risks for the country.
For years, Netanyahu has viewed Iran as an existential adversary and sought American military involvement in a campaign to topple its leadership.
American public opinion reflected growing opposition to the war well before the midterm elections. A Gallup survey conducted in October found that 47% of registered voters considered the situation in Iran extremely important to their congressional vote.
CBS News exit polling subsequently found that most voters believed the U.S. had made the wrong decision in attacking Iran, including approximately one-quarter of Republican voters.
A separate analysis by the Brookings Institution found that a majority of Americans believed the conflict had affected U.S. interests more negatively than positively.
Trump himself acknowledged earlier on November 4 that the war contributed to the Republican losses, telling Fox News, “I think a part of it was Iran.” He similarly told The Wall Street Journal that “Iran was a piece of it.”
The president nevertheless defended his decision, saying, “I did the right thing,” and adding that he “would have done it again.”
Vance’s admission has laid bare the political consequences of a decision made by the Republican administration itself. Having taken the U.S. into a war that Israel had spent months lobbying to initiate, Trump and his party now face the loss of congressional control, with voters delivering a verdict on a foreign policy that many believed had placed another country’s strategic priorities ahead of their own.
Despite the electoral defeat and Vance’s acknowledgment of the political cost, the Trump administration is once again preparing for a possible resumption of war against Iran following renewed pressure from Netanyahu.
The Israeli prime minister has urged Trump to launch fresh strikes immediately after the midterm elections, while U.S. and Israeli militaries have already drawn up plans for renewed joint attacks, ABC News and Axios reported.
Netanyahu is pushing for further military action to weaken Iran and pursue regime change, rather than pursue a negotiated settlement.
