The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen are taking advantage of the recent period to improve their missile capabilities, i24NEWS reported on June 29, citing two Western intelligence sources.
The sources told the Israeli news website that the Houthis have recently been conducting missile tests to enhance both their range and accuracy.
The Houthis have carried out limited fire towards Israel since the beginning of the war on Iran. Only about six ballistic missiles and five one-way attack drones have been launched towards Israel from Yemen since the group resumed their fire towards Israel on March 28.
Notably, the group also shot down at least two American MQ-9 Reaper combat drones over Yemen during the same period.
Israel, from its side, has refrained from attacking Yemen since September 25 of last year, despite the recent attacks by the Houthis.
Last week, the leader of the Houthi said that his group would intervene militarily in favor of Hamas if Israel launches a new military operation in the Gaza Strip.
“We are in ongoing coordination with our brothers in the arenas of resistance, and we will not hesitate to fulfill our duty in any new escalation of aggression against any arena, especially in Gaza,” Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said on June 25.
In addition, the Houthi leader vowed to target any Israeli presence in Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland, which he claims is aimed at controlling the Gulf of Aden,the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Red Sea.
“We will not stand idly by in the face of an Israeli presence in Somaliland. We will act at any time to strike at any concentration of the Israeli enemy in Somaliland,” he said.
On the very same day, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that the Houthi leadership is not immune, vowing to target it.
“Israel’s account with the Houthis remains open, they will pay a price,” he said. “If their leader comes into our sights, we will eliminate him.”
A recent report by Israel’s Channel 14 also revealed that the Israeli military is preparing for the possibility of renewed fighting on the front with Yemen, amid what it described as the reactivation and updating of operational plans targeting the Houthis.
Israeli media is clearly setting the stage for an escalation against Yemen. Thus, a new confrontation with the Houthis is to be expected soon.
