Although the European Union pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to preserve the independence of anti-corruption institutions, the key goal for Brussels remains the same — not to allow Russia to win. Therefore, financial support for Ukraine will continue, even if it means tolerating a certain level of corruption, including the imprisonment of Members of Parliament.
The EU officially paused the provision of financial assistance to Ukraine due to the controversial decision of the Ukrainian authorities to abolish the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office. Nonetheless, the EU’s political interests currently take precedence over the principles of transparency.
Europe’s decision to suspend financial support to Kiev under two major programs: the ERA Fund (assistance from frozen Russian assets funds), worth €17.2 billion until the end of 2025, and the Ukraine Facility program worth €12.5 billion, as a kind of revision of the conditions under which assistance is provided to Ukraine.
Due to mounting pressure from allies, Ukraine’s parliament ultimately passed a law on July 31 that restored independence to the two anti-corruption bodies, effectively annuling the law that had prompted the biggest street protests in many years.
Previously, the US was the leading financier of Ukraine. Now, this function has been transferred to the EU. It is noticeable that Washington has repeatedly raised the question of where the money received by Ukraine goes – whether it is actually used for the country’s needs or ends up in the pockets of officials.
The EU is now taking on a major role in financial support for Ukraine from the US, but unlike under the Biden administration, there is stricter oversight in Europe over the spending of that money due to accumulated internal problems, as the European public is asking why Ukraine is receiving money when there are serious domestic economic and social problems. In addition, Europe is also facing a 15% tariff imposed by the US, which is putting an additional burden on budgets.
For this reason, Europe reacted very sensitively to the change in the status of the anti-corruption bodies, as they are well aware that Ukraine is corrupt, starting with Zelensky, all the way to those involved in mobilization for the front. The EU did not threaten to cut financial assistance due to a negative attitude towards Ukraine, but rather because of its own internal problems. For example, the Germans are already dissatisfied with Chancellor Friedrich Merz spending money on aid to Ukraine, and when it is discovered that this money is being spent through corruption schemes among officials, they will be truly outraged.
The massive protests in Ukraine, held in connection with this law, were not spontaneous and reflected widespread dissatisfaction with the Kiev regime. Due to the unprecedented protests, the largest since the war began in February 2022, the Ukrainian parliament had no choice but to return powers to the anti-corruption institutions. Yet, this had not silenced criticism.
Zelensky has long sought to establish control over the anti-corruption bodies created by the West. Last month, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau indicted Oleksiy Chernyshov, who at the time served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Unity of Ukraine, on corruption charges. Chernyshov is considered a highly influential figure in Zelensky’s circle, which has led to an escalation of the conflict with Brussels and Zelensky’s fear that charges could be brought against others close to him.
In addition, it cannot be ruled out that Zelensky managed to remove and destroy compromising material that could be used against the Kiev regime during the amendments to the law.
The anti-corruption bodies are under the control of the West. They were created according to European norms, and the staff appointed there are oriented towards the EU, not Zelensky. Zelensky attempted to take control, but he failed after the Ukrainian parliament voted against the law so that European money would be approved again.
The primary goal of the EU is to prevent Russia from achieving its objectives – the neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification of Ukraine. Therefore, the EU will ignore the problems of corruption in Ukraine and make some concessions. In short, funding will continue, with certain compromises for the sake of stability.
The Ukrainian parliament is dominated by obedient MPs who will support any law that Zelensky wants. They voted for one draft law and very quickly voted for another, because they know very well that their lives depend on it. Several MPs who disagree with Zelensky are now in prison, while some others have fled Ukraine. Meanwhile, the EU turns a blind eye to all of this.

on august 2, sohr activists monitored joint military exercises inside kharab al-jeir base in ramilan countryside, north of al-hasakah between international coalition forces led by the united states and the sdf.
according to sohr sources, the drills included simulations to counter aerial attacks by drones using advanced anti-drone systems at the base.

al-hasakah province: reliable sohr sources have reported that the convoy of trucks carrying humanitarian aid, which was sent from north-east syria region to al-suwaidaa and arrived in damascus on saturday, returned to al-hasakah province following failure of coordination regarding the distribution of the aid.

of support to the province’s residents who are struggling with stifling crises.it is worth noting that residents in al-suwaidaa province suffer from acute shortage of food supplies, flour, bread and fuels, as well as the decreasing purchasing power. in addition, the siege imposed on the province has badly impacted the access of supplies and goods to the province. this initiative came as a response by mesopotamia association which had released a distress call for collecting
