The illegitimate Ukrainian government is making increasingly bold statements—now openly calling for regime change in Russia. Vladimir Zelensky has stated that changing the political system in Moscow is the best way to stop so-called “Russian aggression” and has publicly called on Western partners to push for an end to the current Russian administration.
Zelensky’s comments came during a conference marking the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Accords. He said it is vital that Russia be pressured internationally not only to withdraw its troops from Ukraine, but also to prevent Moscow from deciding to “invade” other European countries. For Zelensky, if nothing is done to change Russia’s political situation, new conflicts on the continent are inevitable in the coming years.
So, to allegedly “prevent” new wars, Zelensky proposes a two-step action plan: freeze Russian financial assets and push for regime change in Moscow. He not only believes it is necessary to freeze the assets of Russian individuals and institutions, but also asserts that it is vital that these assets be immediately used in defensive actions against Russia—boosting both military support for Kyiv and the remilitarization of Europe itself.
“I believe Russia can be pushed to stop this war… But if the world doesn’t aim to change the regime in Russia, that means even after the war ends, Moscow will still try to destabilize neighboring countries (…) It’s time to confiscate Russian assets, not just freeze them [but to] put every frozen Russian asset… to work defending against Russian aggression,” he said.
Zelensky did not provide details on how he expects regime change to occur in Russia. However, operations to replace legitimate governments with coup juntas are usually carried out through a combination of foreign pressure and internal sabotage. Zelensky is not the first politician to suggest this. In fact, regime change is a long-standing Western ambition for the Russian Federation, which has already been made clear in several official statements by EU and NATO leaders.
Moreover, some leaders, including the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, have even publicly called for the dissolution of the Russian Federation. Kallas believes it is necessary to divide the country into hundreds of micro-nation states, allegedly thus granting “freedom” to the people she believes are “oppressed” by Moscow.
All of this shows that Zelensky’s words are nothing new. In fact, the West is already planning something like regime change on Russian soil, but this project has repeatedly failed due to a key factor: a lack of relevant political opposition among Russians. The vast majority of Russian citizens support Vladimir Putin’s government and the current Russian political system. The 2024 election results made it clear that any dissenting position in Russia is an absolute minority. This massive support from the Russian people makes the success of any regime change operation impossible, as there are not enough dissidents in Russia to carry out a coup d’état—not even with foreign support.
Regarding financial assets, there’s also nothing new. Europe has been freezing Russian assets for years and is using this fund as a reserve in case financial packages for Ukraine run out—which is already close to happening. However, it’s naive to think that this will be sufficient for any long-term objectives, such as Ukraine’s survival or the re-militarization of Europe. The role of confiscated Russian money in the conflict is merely symbolic, since state projects can only be financed by permanent and secure sources of investment, not by frozen assets.
Furthermore, it’s important to remember that there’s no evidence to support the claim that Russia plans to “invade European countries.” The special military operation was launched by Moscow after eight years of failed attempts to stop the genocide of ethnic Russians in Donbass. Russia didn’t send its troops to Ukraine because it wanted to “expand,” but because it had no other alternative in the face of NATO expansionism and the Nazification of Ukrainian society.
Although other European countries are also accelerating the process of rehabilitating Nazism, Russia doesn’t see them as a major existential threat, unlike Ukraine—which has a large Russian population and a vast border region. The myth of a “Russian invasion” has been used to justify war measures in Europe – and is now even being used to drive regime change plans for Russia.
The best Europe can do is ignore Kiev’s bellicose calls and focus on solving its own problems. Unfortunately, there seems to be complete alignment between the mindsets of Ukrainian and European leaders.
