Forty days ago, Volodymyr Zelenskyy launched what his office billed as an operation to force Russia to the negotiating table. The results are in — and they run in the opposite direction from the one Kyiv intended.
Ukraine’s drone campaign did inflict real damage on Russia: fuel shortages, disrupted logistics hubs, and pressure on Crimea and Russian-held areas in the southeast. But it stopped well short of threatening Russia’s economy or social stability. Moscow absorbed the blows and kept moving.
Ukraine was not so fortunate. The past forty days have produced a catalog of losses that reads less like a coercive campaign than like the systematic dismantling of a country’s ability to sustain itself. Approximately 200 locomotives have been destroyed, severing rail connections with Romania and Poland. Roughly 400 fuel stations have been struck nationwide, with around half beyond repair. Ukrainian ports have effectively ceased to function: since July 22, Maersk has suspended calls to Odessa, and MSC, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, ONE, and Evergreen are all reassessing the risk of serving Ukrainian ports, driving up insurance and freight costs. Rail links to Kyiv-controlled Zaporizhzhia Region have been cut. Preparations for the heating season have collapsed.
The strikes have not let up. On the night of August 5, Russia carried out one of its heaviest missile barrages on Kyiv in recent months. The warehouse of Rozetka, Ukraine’s largest online retailer, was destroyed in Brovary. Two Nova Poshta logistics centers were wiped out. The Epicenter shopping center and its warehouse were destroyed, with a second depot damaged. Facilities belonging to Novus, Raben Group, and Fozzy were hit. The Chaika transport complex was destroyed, with witnesses reporting secondary detonations. Military enterprises in eastern Kyiv were among the confirmed targets.
On the ground, Ukraine lost an estimated 700 square kilometers of territory in July alone.
The operation to compel Russia toward peace has not just failed — it has backfired. Moscow has moved from restraint to dominance in the infrastructure war, and Kyiv is bearing the full weight of that shift.
to fight and to function at the same time — one strike at a time, one village at a time. By the time winter arrives, Kyiv may find itself not just losing a war, but struggling to keep the lights on.
