The Hamas Movement is rebuilding its military capabilities amid the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Channel 13 reported on May 10, citing a document recently presented to the Israeli political leadership.
The ceasefire in Gaza — a part of a wider peace plan put forward by United States President Donald Trump — entered into effect on October 10 of last year, approximately seven months ago.
The document cited by the Israeli news channel alleges that Hamas is producing hundreds of explosive charges, mortars, and anti-tank rockets every single month. The group’s military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, indeed possesses the know-how.
In addition, the document says that the group is working to collect intelligence on Israeli forces operating in Gaza, and is even conducting military training in the Strip, despite the current occupation.
The document also assesses that Hamas may have made a “quantum leap” in terms of rebuilding its military capabilities since the beginning of the ceasefire, giving it a much better chance to confront any future Israeli ground maneuver in Gaza.
Channel 13 report came out just two days after the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) said that Hamas is supplying itself through smuggling from the air, sea and land, rebuilding its strength and rearming.
The news outlet alleged that Hamas is using the humanitarian aid corridor for smuggling weapons and dual-use materials, confiscating aid to sell and fund operations, while increasing its open presence and control over most of the territory not controlled by Israeli forces.
JNS also speculated that the group may be using drones to smuggle weapons from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula into Gaza, and even alleged that Hamas developed maritime smuggling capabilities using containers that float to the southern shores of the Strip.
As of today, reports indicate that Israel has expanded its military control over Gaza to include roughly 59% to nearly two-thirds of the Strip’s territory, with some estimates suggesting up to 75-81% is designated as no-go zones or under forced evacuation orders.
The ceasefire has also been very much one-sided, with Israeli strikes hitting Gaza on the regular since October 10. Over 760 Palestinians have been reportedly killed.
These actions by Israel, in addition to Hamas refusal to disarm, has very much led to the failure of Trump’s peace plan, which is yet to move forward.
While Israel and the U.S. are now both focused on Iran, and to a lesser extent on Hezbollah in Lebanon, military operations could eventually resume in Gaza. Reports like the ones recently released by Channel 13 and JNS, although mostly accurate, are clearly meant to provide a pretext.
The next war in the Strip will not be a walk in the park for Israel, however. As seen with Hezbollah — which significantly rebuilt its military capabilities during the previous ceasefire in Lebanon —Hamas will likely put on serious resistance. It won’t be even surprising if the group shows up with an effective drone force, just like its allies in Lebanon.
