Israeli troops have nearly completed the capture of the town of Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon, a well-known stronghold of Hezbollah, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on April 13.
The attack on Bint Jbeil is being led by the 98th Division with its Paratroopers and Commando brigades, along with the Givati Infantry Brigade.
In a statement, the IDF said that it initially isolated and encircled the town to prevent Hezbollah from bringing in reinforcements or escaping. The military estimated that at least 150 Hezbollah operatives, including members of the group’s elite Radwan Force, were at the town before it was isolated.
“Over the past week, the forces completed the encirclement and launched an offensive in the town of Bint Jbeil,” the military said.
“The troops eliminated more than 100 terrorists from the Hezbollah terror organization in close-quarters combat and from the air, destroyed dozens of terrorist infrastructures, and located hundreds of weapons in the area,” it added.
The IDF said in another statement that troops of the Egoz commando unit identified and killed a cell of Hezbollah fighters who had been planning to carry out drone attacks on Israeli troops in Bint Jbeil. Later, another fighter from the cell was identified, and he was targeted and killed using a first-person view (FPV) drone, according to the military.
Bint Jbeil holds a very symbolic value for Hezbollah. During the 2006 war, the group defeated the IDF after a fierce battle in the town, preventing it from capturing it.
Earlier, in May 2000, after the IDF withdrew from southern Lebanon following an 18-year occupation, then-Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah delivered a victory speech in the stadium of Bint Jbeil, where he infamously described Israel as “weaker than a spider web.”
The stadium in question has been captured by Israeli troops, according to the IDF, which even boasted about the achievement.
“Bint Jbeil 2000: There was someone here who spoke and boasted about webs and spiders. Today, that man no longer exists, the stadium is gone, and his words are worth nothing,” said 98th Division commander Brig. Gen. Guy Levy in a missive to troops.
“Bint Jbeil 2026: Our forces control the area, destroying terror infrastructure and dozens of terrorists,” he added.
Hezbollah, from its side, is still fighting inside Bint Jbeil and in other parts of southern Lebanon. Two IDF soldiers were moderately hurt and six lightly wounded by a drone attack in the region, according to Hebrew media.
The group also continued to fire rockets at northern Israel throughout the day, including one that injured a woman in the city of Nahariya.
The Israeli push in Bint Jbeil came as Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors in the United States are preparing to hold a first round of direct peace talks on April 14. The IDF is likely planning to capture the town before the talks, which could result in some ceasefire.
In a televised speech, Hezbollah secretary-general Naim Qassem called on the Lebanese government to cancel the meeting, describing the talks as pointless. He even vowed that his group will continue to confront Israeli attacks on the country.
