Satellite imagery released on September 21 shows at least 25 United States Air Force aerial refueling aircraft at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest reported concentration of American tankers at the base since the war with Iran began in February.
The aircraft had been moved away from Al Udeid during the opening days of the conflict because of the threat of Iranian missile and drone strikes, with tankers returning in smaller numbers from June.
The imagery from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellite shows the aircraft spread across several sections of the base rather than parked in dense formations. That arrangement reduces the number of aircraft exposed to a single strike and is consistent with the precautions the U.S. military has taken after Iranian attacks on its installations across the region.
The tanker buildup comes as Washington has issued a series of new security warnings across the Middle East. U.S. missions have urged Americans to exercise heightened vigilance amid the risk of further escalation, while the State Department has warned of possible airspace closures and other disruptions.
The warnings have coincided with increasingly direct statements from President Donald Trump. On September 17, he told Axios, “I have a big decision coming up. Do I want to go in and annihilate them or do I not? It’s a big decision. Anything could happen with me.” Three days later, the U.S. president said he was in “deciding mode” over Iran.
Iran responded the same day, warning that any new U.S. attack would trigger “sustained retaliation against U.S. bases and interests” and that countries supporting Washington would be treated as parties to the conflict. Iran’s military central command also said it had information that an attack was being prepared.
Later on September 21, IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi issued a further warning, saying, “If a new aggression occurs, we will certainly change the weaponry and the geography of the war.”
All in all, recent signs indicate that the U.S. is about to escalate again against Iran. While no similar signs have been detected in Israel so far, a surprise joint attack on the Islamic Republic can’t be ruled out. Tehran will certainly respond with full force.
