Rosoboronexport, part of Russia’s Rostec State Corporation, launched on July 28 a global marketing campaign for the new RVV-SDM medium-range air-to-air missile, developed and manufactured by the Tactical Missiles Corporation.
The missile is designed primarily to equip the Su-57E fifth-generation fighter jet, produced by United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), a Rostec subsidiary, for export markets. It can also be adapted for other Russian-made aircraft and integrated into foreign aircraft systems after modifications.
“Rosoboronexport notes a growing interest of the global market in the Su-57E fifth-generation fighter,” Rosoboronexport Director General Alexander Mikheev said in the statement. “The aircraft has proved its superiority in actual combat conditions over the most advanced air defense and electronic warfare systems.”
Mikheev highlighted the RVV-SDM’s capabilities, saying it features “a longer launch range, an increased power-to-weight ratio, higher effectiveness, as well as better aerodynamic performance.” He added that the missile incorporates “a passive radar homing channel, providing complete stealth, high guidance accuracy, fire-and-forget effectiveness, and resistance to jamming.”
The RVV-SDM is capable of engaging aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles around the clock in electronic countermeasures environments. It uses an active/passive radar seeker, inertial navigation and a radio update link. The weapon can target aircraft at altitudes from 15 meters to 25 kilometers and speeds up to Mach 3.
A new version of the R-77, dubbed the R-77M or “izdeliye 180,” entered service with the Russian Aerospace Forces very recently, and based on the details in Rosoboronexport’s statement, the new RVV-SDM is most likely the export copy of that version.
Rosoboronexport also announced that it is offering the RVV-MD2 short-range air-to-air missile and the combat-proven RVV-BD long-range missile alongside the Su-57E.
The RVV-MD2 is the export copy of the infrared-homing R-74M2, developed especially for the Su-57, while the RVV-BD is the export copy of the well-known R-37M. Both missiles were unveiled before, although it is unclear if they were ready for export.
Rosoboronexport also pointed out in its statement that Su-57E can carry a range of air-to-surface weapons, including Kh-38MLE, Kh-69 stealth cruise missiles, Kh-58UShKE anti-radar missiles, Kh-35UE anti-ship missiles, KAB-250LG-E guided bombs and UPAB-1500B-E guided glide bombs.
Weapons can be carried internally to maintain the aircraft’s low radar signature or on external hardpoints. The company says the Su-57E is the only fifth-generation fighter capable of carrying large Kh-69 cruise missiles in a fully stealth configuration.
“Rosoboronexport is ready to negotiate contracts with countries friendly to Russia for the supply of both the Su-57E fighter and the air-launched weapons designed for it,” Mikheev said. “In its export activities, the Company prioritizes the needs of the Russian Armed Forces for weapons and military equipment.”
He added that Russia’s defense industry can guarantee production and delivery timelines “that are on par with, and often exceed those of our global competitors.”
Russia has already exported the Su-57E. The delivery of the first fighter jets of this type to Algeria, the first customer, was confirmed earlier this year. UAC also rolled out this year the Su-57D, a twin-seat variant of the fighter jet meant to enhance training and fulfill command and control tasks.
With the RVV-SDM offered for export along with the RVV-MD2 and the RVV-BD, a fully-new air-to-air armament suit is finally available for the Su-57E. This will certainly boost the exports of the fighter jet.
