In the Sumy direction, Russian troops have taken control of Korchakivka and broken through the Ukrainian troops’ main defense line north of Sumy. They are now fighting for control of the forested areas near the Sudzha–Sumy highway. In the Kharkiv direction, Russian assault groups have taken half of Pokaliane and are expanding their bridgehead along the Vovcha River towards Okhrimivka. In the Zaporizhzhia direction, Russian troops advanced between Vovshebne and Huliaipilske and reached the outskirts of Novoselivka. Ukrainian troops continue to infiltrate the area in small groups. In the Kupyansk direction, Russian troops are intensifying their offensive from Holubivka. They are striking the positions of Ukrainian units in the forested areas on the left bank of the Oskol River and destroying an M109 self-propelled artillery system. They are also advancing towards Kovsharivka. In the direction of Slovyansk, Russian units have taken control of Orekhovo-Vasylivka, closing a tactical “pocket,” and are fighting for the northern part of Minkivka, Fedorivka Druha, and Nykyforivka. Despite this, the Ukrainian side has strengthened its defenses on the approaches to Rai-Oleksandrivka. Anita Hipper, a representative of the European Commission, stated that the EU and the US share common goals and do not have divergent views on the Ukrainian settlement.
Sumy Direction
In the Sumy direction, units of the “North” troop grouping are advancing towards the city of Sumy, the regional center, from the north and the east. Assault units have cleared Korchakivka and are fighting in the forested area towards Pisarivka. Russian forward groups have begun clashes for control of the forested area on the dominant heights to the south and southeast. Controlling this area will allow Russian troops to exit to the settlements of Nova Sich, Kiyanytsia, and Ivolzhanske, which are located on the banks of the Oleshnya River. Russian troops have effectively wedged themselves into the main defensive line of Ukrainian units north of Sumy.
There are fierce engagements in the Kondrativka area and south of Andriivka. Russian units are conducting combat operations to control Kondrativka. Ukrainian units are trying to retake Andriivka and cut off Russian units advancing towards Korchakivka. Fighting is also ongoing in the forested area around Sadky. In Myropillia, intense firefights continue. To the south, up to Myropilske, Russian troops are advancing through the forest towards the southern outskirts of Myropillia and Mala Rybytsia.
In the Krasnopillia sector, Russian units have straightened the front line by clearing the forested areas of Velykyi, Harkivskyi, and Hranystyi, which are located between Pokrivka, Novodmytrivka, and Taratutyne. Meeting engagements continue in the Khvorostianchyi forest. Russian units are clashing on the outskirts of Mykhailivka and near the pond on the eastern outskirts of Krasnopillia. Russian troops are advancing in tree lines near the railway and in the ravine area west of Taratutyne. To the south, beyond the railway, Russian troops are striking the Riasne settlement.
Kharkiv Direction
In the Burluk direction, Russian troops are advancing in several sectors. Assault groups from the “North” grouping are clashing with Ukrainian forces near Verkhnya Pysarivka. They are advancing through the forested area along the Siverskyi Donets River toward the south. From Zybine, Russian troops are advancing south and have captured approximately half of Pokaliane. Fighting continues in the rest of the village. Russian units have already captured the forested zone and built-up areas south of the river. The prospects for advancement here are not so much for further attacks south as they are for expanding the bridgehead along the riverbed further east.
To the east of Bochkove, Russian units have taken control of another part of the Severodonetskyi Landscape Reserve. Meanwhile, fighting continues on the approaches to Okhrimivka, which is located south of the Vovcha River. Given the growing activity of Russian units in the Sumy area, high activity of Russian troops should also be expected in the Burluk area. The minimum objective will apparently be to reach the entire length of the Vovcha River. To accomplish this, it will be necessary to capture the settlements of Rybalchyne, Shabelne, and Mykolaivka. This alone will enable attacks to increase from the south of the Vovcha River or, conversely, allow troops to take up positions along the water barrier, which would complicate the work of small Ukrainian groups.
Zaporizhzhia Direction
Fierce clashes continue in the Zaporizhzhia direction. Ukrainian units are making new attempts at infiltration. In the zone of Ukrainian activity on the northern flank of the direction, footage has again appeared of strikes on scattered groups in the vicinity of Berezove.
The most active combat operations are ongoing on the western flank, including in the Huliaipole area. In early and mid-April, Ukrainian units made several infiltration attempts by small groups and managed to enter Varvarivka, where they were hit by drone strikes. A similar raid was repelled in the Staroukrainka and Zheleznodorozhne area. Infiltration groups cannot control territory; if detected, they are quickly destroyed.
To the southwest of Huliaipole, Russian units remain in the lead. They have managed to wedge themselves between Vovshebne and Huliaipilske and bypass the defense line to the north, reaching the outskirts of Novoselivka. It is not yet possible to speak of significant increases in control zones. According to the most optimistic estimates, Huliaipilske and Vovshebne are already in a “grey zone,” if not under the control of Russian units. Ukrainian units are trying to slow the advance of the “East” grouping with large-scale attacks that have been ongoing for several months, but they cannot stop it completely. From the east, Russian troops are gradually advancing toward Orikhiv and Mala Tokmachka in the neighboring west Zaporizhzhia direction.
Slaviansk Direction
In the southern sector near Slaviansk, Russian units have seized control of the Orekhovo-Vasylivka settlement and advanced westward, closing a tactical “pocket.” Fighting continues in the north of Minkivka, where Ukrainian forces are counterattacking through Holubivka and using the highway from Slavyansk for logistics. Despite the significant amount of Ukrainian equipment destroyed on this highway, Ukrainian command continues to send additional forces to this sector.
There are no confirmations yet from the ground regarding the settlement of Dibrova. Clashes continue in Fedorivka Druha and Nykyforivka. Due to the large number of drones, the zone of effective engagement extends as far as Lypivka. The Ukrainian side has reinforced this line in an attempt to stop Russian units from advancing from the south towards Rai-Oleksandrivka.
Kupyansk Direction
In the Kupyansk direction, Ukrainian forces are attempting to advance towards Dvorichna from the northern flank. In the Zakhidne–Velyka Shapkivka sector to the south, the line of combat contact has not changed significantly, though the intensity of Ukrainian counterattacks has decreased considerably following increased Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian unit facilities in the area. The Ukrainian military is attempting to bring one of the Russian troops’ logistical routes on the western bank of the Oskol under fire control by deploying drone crews to the area.
In Kupyansk itself, the situation has not changed significantly. Ukrainian units continue to attack in the direction of Radkivka. Ukrainian infantry have been accumulating on the western flank along the Blahodativka–Nechvolodivka–Kivariivka line. Meanwhile, Russian units are intensifying their offensive from Holubivka, striking Ukrainian unit positions in forested areas on the left bank of the Oskol.
Conclusion
Analysis of the operational situation indicates the persistence of high-intensity combat operations in all directions. In the Sumy direction, Russian units have advanced near Korchakivka and penetrated the Ukrainian troops’ main defensive line north of Sumy. This creates the conditions for a further advance toward the Sudzha–Sumy highway and an expansion of control over the approaches to the regional center. In the Kharkiv direction, consolidation in Pokaliane and expansion of the bridgehead along the Vovcha River threaten the flanks of the Ukrainian defense. In the Zaporizhzhia direction, Russian units maintain the initiative despite Ukrainian infiltration tactics, advancing towards Huliaipilske and Novoselivka. In the Slaviansk and Kupyansk directions, positional battles of varying intensity are ongoing.
In an international political context, Anita Hipper, the European Commission’s representative for foreign policy and security, stated that the EU and the US share common goals regarding the Ukrainian settlement and do not have divergent views. In response to a journalist’s question regarding potential disagreements following the telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, during which both leaders acknowledged that Kyiv is impeding the peace process, Hipper emphasized that the European Union has consistently supported US initiatives aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace. The telephone conversation, initiated by the Russian side, was the 12th between the two heads of state since Trump took office in 2025. This statement demonstrates Brussels’ desire to maintain the appearance of unity with Washington amid growing signs of conflict fatigue.
